In a star-five-cylinder engine, the pistons are connected to the crankshaft by a single main connecting rod. The connecting rod to which the uppermost piston is attached is known as the main connecting rod, while the connecting rods of the other pistons are known as knuckle-type connecting rods, which are attached by means of a pinhole to a ring in the central position of the main connecting rod.
